The Omaha Police Department and Proactive Crime Prevention
The Omaha Police Department continues to lead by example with proactive crime prevention efforts, creating a safer city for the residents it serves.
In 2024, Omaha recorded 19 homicides, the fewest since 1990. Additionally, Omaha is one of the few comparable major cities to experience a significant decrease in both yearly homicides and homicides per capita over the past decade. In 2013, Omaha had 42 homicides and a per capita homicide rate of 9.2 per 100,000 residents. By 2024, those numbers dropped to 19 homicides and a rate of 3.9 per 100,000 residents.
This decrease in violent crime in Omaha is the result of a combination of factors, including the tireless efforts of Omaha Police Department employees, ongoing collaboration with community partners, and steadfast support from Mayor Jean Stothert.
Collaboration between the Uniform Patrol Bureau, the Gang Unit, the Homicide Unit, and support staff in the Crime Analysis and Forensic Investigations Units has been instrumental in reducing crime. By sharing information and aggressively pursuing resolutions to violent crimes immediately after arriving at a scene, these teams have enhanced their effectiveness and improved outcomes.
This hard work has contributed to the OPD Homicide Unit achieving a 100% clearance rate for the past two years, while the OPD Assault Unit continues to solve a high percentage of non-fatal shootings.
The positive trend extends beyond homicides—every major crime index in Omaha has seen a decline from 2023 to 2024. Total crime dropped by nearly 17%, continuing a long-term trend of reducing crime in the city. In 2011, the total crime index stood at 21,073, and by 2024, that number fell to 17,272—the lowest recorded total in more than a decade.
